Awards & Recognition

As you explore our magnificent building, we invite you to take note of the plaques that adorn our walls. These plaques honor the sons and daughters of Purdue who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Several named awards are also prominently displayed in honor of some of Purdue's most influential and inspiring leaders. Their significant contributions to Purdue and its student body paved the way for future generations of Boilermakers to take Giant Leaps.

Eric Gilbertson

Eric Gilbertson began his employment with Union Rack and Roll his freshman year at Purdue University in the Fall of 2019. He is a senior from Burke, Virginia studying Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering with a minor in Accounting. He is a member of the esteemed Purdue Varsity Glee Club and enjoys performing in community theater and singing barbershop.

Sania Nanin

Sonia Nanin is a senior studying Business Communication from Elgin, Illinois. She is completing the Brian Lamb School of Communication’s degree-in-3 program along with a certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. While being a full-time student, she’s worked with Purdue Food Co. as a marketing intern since 2021 and has worked on various projects including Instagram reels, interviews, posters, signage, and more. After graduating this May, she will be working for PepsiCo Frito-Lay in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a Sales Associate and will miss her Boilermaker family and all the memories she’s made.

Samantha Huston

Samantha Huston studied Hospitality and Tourism Management with a minor in Event Planning while here at Purdue University. She has worked at the Purdue Union Club Hotel for the last two years, dividing her time between the front desk, housekeeping and events. After graduation, she will be moving to Charlotte, North Carolina to work at the JW Marriott as a housekeeping manager.

World War I & II Honor Rolls

To establish a permanent monument to patriotic service, the Purdue Memorial Union building is dedicated as a perpetual memorial to theses sons of our alma mater who, in the performance of the highest duty of citizenship and in devotion to lofty ideals, gave their lives in the service of their country. It is proudly displayed on the first floor of PMU.

International Flag Display
Located in the northwest wing of the first floor of PMU, more than 120 flags are represented in recognition of the countries and alumni of Purdue University. These United Nations flags reflect Purdue’s institutional commitment to diversity, promotion of opportunities in a global community, and the inherent value of study abroad experience.
The Founder and Presidents of Purdue University

Purdue University was founded in 1869 by John Purdue and is currently led by the 12th University President and former Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. This display depicts the founder of Purdue University, John Purdue, as well as the 11 former Presidents of Purdue University. This display was a gift of the Class of 1921 on the occasion of its 50th reunion and is located on the first floor of PMU.

The John C. Smalley Outstanding Student Employee Award

John C. Smalley was the Director of PMU from 1960-1976. This award, located on the ground floor, across from Pappy's Sweet shop, is presented annually to a student employee of the Purdue Memorial Union who best reflected the extraordinary quality of leadership, commitment, and loyalty embodied by John C. Smalley.

The Madonna A. Warren Outstanding Student Employee Award

Madonna A. Warren served as the Reservation Manager of the Union Club Hotel from 1939-1944 and 1947-1979. Presented annually to a student employee of the Purdue Memorial Union who best represented the distinctive contributions made to Purdue University by Madonna A. Warren, and is located on the ground floor of PMU across from Pappy's Sweet Shop.

One Brick Higher Award

The One Brick Higher Award is named after the famous quote of former Purdue President James Smart, who vowed that once the original Heavilon Hall had been burnt down, it would be built “one brick higher.” This award was created to recognize the importance of individuals who make a difference in our lives by going beyond their required role. The Arthur G. Hansen Recognition Award

Betty M. Nelson Special Recognition Award
